a dynasty of bangladeshi restaurateurs

British Raj – Royston’s original Indian restaurant – was first established in 1976. Located in Royston High Street, the restaurant was the town's first experience
of high quality British-Bangladeshi curry & Tandoori cooking.

The British Raj went from strength to strength, collecting many national accolades across the years and was highly regarded as the ‘best Indo-Bangladeshi restaurant in East Anglia’.

Due to retirement, the British Raj of Royston sadly ended in 2004.

However, the spirit of the British Raj never ceased. Within the Choudhury family, there has always been a yearning to revive the Raj and bring back to Royston an unparalleled level of the very best Indian sub-continental cuisine.

In 2018, former Restaurant Manager Siraj Choudhury (Raj) re-launched Royston’s much-loved eating place as ‘British Raj Express’, a takeaway & delivery operation with the firm goal to establish itself as the ‘best takeaway in East Anglia’.

The following year, in 2019, Raj handed over the reins to his son, Safwaan, who himself owned another popular takeaway across town. Previously in 2015, Safwaan Choudhury became ‘Britain’s youngest Indian takeaway owner’ at the tender age of 18.

Having spent several years working in some of the region’s top restaurants, Safwaan has a keen ethos on providing excellent quality of food, hospitable service and a welcoming charm for which he has become well-known for.

The father & son duo, together with their experienced chefs, have certainly put Royston back on the culinary map. In 2019, British Raj Express proudly featured amongst the Top 10 Takeaways in Britain at the British Curry Awards, regarded as the 'Oscars of the curry industry'.

In 2020, British Raj Express was crowned winner of the British Curry Awards - in a special ceremony recognising 'industry heroes' who provided food & support to communities and frontline workers during the Covid-19 pandemic - the Royston business was named 'Best Takeaway During the Pandemic'.

At just 23-years-old, Safwaan Choudhury became the youngest recipient of the highly coveted British Curry Awards.

The accolade was a result of the British Raj team delivering thousands of complimentary meals to NHS staff and frontline workers across the country. Safwaan & Siraj were both issued "Hero of Hertfordshire" awards by
Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, for their work in the community.

As the world recovers from a global pandemic, Safwaan & his team look to continue their charitable work locally for those in need here in the United Kingdom and abroad in their native Bangladesh.

Subsequently in 2021, Just Eat recognised the Royston outfit at the British Takeaway Awards with a national '
Good Deed Hero' again in recognition for services to the community.

You are unlikely to find a more enthusiastic team or takeaway that will go to greater lengths to please in terms of high calibre of food and friendliness of service; whilst keeping the community at heart.
