british raj in hertfordshire
history in the making
British Raj – Royston’s original Indian restaurant – was established by Nazir Choudhury in 1976. A charming host & veteran restaurateur, Mr. Choudhury introduced Royston to its first experience of high quality British-Bangladeshi curry & Tandoori cooking.
The restaurant went from strength to strength, collecting many national accolades across the years and was highly regarded as the ‘best Indo-Bangladeshi restaurant in East Anglia’.
Due to ill health, Mr. Choudhury retired after over 4 decades in the hospitality industry; subsequently, the British Raj sadly ended in 2004.
However, the spirit of the British Raj never ceased. Within the Choudhury family, there has always been a yearning to revive the Raj and bring back to Royston an unparalleled level of the very best Indian sub-continental cuisine.
In 2018, former Restaurant Manager Siraj Choudhury (Raj) re-launched Royston’s much-loved eating place as ‘British Raj Express’, a takeaway & delivery operation with the firm goal to establish itself as the ‘best takeaway in East Anglia’.
The following year, Raj handed over the reins to his son, Safwaan, who himself ran another popular takeaway across town. In 2015, Safwaan Choudhury became ‘Britain’s youngest Indian takeaway owner’ at the tender age of 18.
Having spent several years working in some of the region’s top restaurants, Safwaan has a keen ethos on providing excellent quality of food, hospitable service and a welcoming charm which he has become well-known for.
The father & son duo, together with their experienced chefs, have certainly put Royston back on the culinary map. In 2019, British Raj proudly featured amongst the Top 10 Takeaways in Britain at both the British Curry Awards & Asian Curry Awards respectively.
You are unlikely to find a more enthusiastic team or takeaway that will go to greater lengths to please in terms of high calibre of food and friendliness of service.
